this is so true for honestly EVERY artistic endeavor. it's why it's exceedingly important for people like you and me to reveal the REALITY that our creative gifts don't all of a sudden become incredibly active and sought-after JUST BECAUSE of our first "big gig".
regarding your financial "advice" section, I controlled this by having a normal job be my safety net. it has given me FREEDOM to do anything i want creatively. I've heard so often from starving artists that this mindset is counter to productivity & creativity, but I disagree entirely. Give yourself security first!
My strategy so far that has been FULFILLING is like you said: nurturing relationships first.
Build your "list" from your family & friends.
Provide something FOR them. Don't ASK for their attention.
